The new Pirates Of The Caribbean movie is the second most expensive movie ever made

Rory Cashin

The fifth entry into the Pirates Of The Caribbean is set to dock in Irish cinemas on 26 May, and to say it comes with a bit of a hefty price-tag is an understatement.

Johnny Depp returns in Salazar’s Revenge (previously titled Dead Men Tell No Tales) as Captain Jack Sparrow, rejoined by Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom, with Javier Bardem as the new ghostly villain.

There’s also ghost sharks, so we were sold from the get-go.

However, the early reported budget for the movie, before a drop of advertising or promotion, is an incredible $320 million!

That makes it officially the second most expensive movie ever made.

Wondering what the most expensive movie ever made was? Well, we’re glad you asked, but it turns out to be that it was in fact that previous Pirates movie, 2011’s On Stranger Tides, which cost $378.5 million.

Previous to Salazar’s Revenge, the last runner-up was also a Pirates movie, the 2007 threequel At World’s End, which cost a not-to-be-sniffed-at $300 million.

The rest of the top ten include Avengers: Age Of Ultron ($280m), John Carter ($264m), Tangled ($260m), Spider-Man 3 ($258m), Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince ($250m), The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies ($250m), Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice ($250m), Captain America: Civil War ($250m) and Fast & Furious 8 ($250m).

If you’re wondering why the Pirates movies are so expensive, it’s because movies filmed at sea are notorious for being incredibly more expensive that land-based ones. Adjusted for inflation, the likes of Titanic, Waterworld and (bizarrely) The Chronicle Of Narnia: Prince Caspian would all be counted as some of the most expensive ever made.

Still though, we don’t have long to wait to see all that money up on the big screen.
