Kristin Wiig has been confirmed to play the new villain in the Wonder Woman sequel.

The film’s director, Patty Jenkins, shared the news on Twitter on Friday afternoon – adding that they were “SO excited” by the plans for the film.

She wrote:

“So excited to confirm the most thrilling news.

“Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family.

“Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned.”

She ended the post by appearing to confirm the role that the Bridesmaids alumni will be playing, adding, “#Cheetah”.

Wiig was first rumoured to be in talks for the role last week, but nothing had officially be confirmed until now.

The DC Comics character Cheetah first made an appearance in the Wonder Woman comics of the 1940s.

Since then, a total of four characters have taken on the mantle.

The most recent character known as Cheetah is Barbara Minerva, an archaeologist who goes through a cheetah-like transformation after undergoing who is transformed in a cheetah-like being through an ancient African ritual.

The first Wonder Woman movie was released in June 2017.

It quickly became one of the largest hits of the DC Extended Universe film franchise, among both critics and fans – earning more than $821 million at the box office.
