Tonight’s First Dates Ireland looks painfully awkward

PAINFUL.

Oh, god.

We’ve all been on bad dates.

You show up, don’t fancy them and think, sure look it’s grand, maybe they’ll be fun.

You discover that they’re not fun and you think, sure look it’s grand, maybe they’ll be nice.

You discover that they are, in fact, the rudest and meanest person in the entire world and you think, sure look I’m here now so I might as well just get drunk, grin and bear it.

And so goes the next six months of your love life.

Stunning.

We do have to admit though that one of the dates in the latest preview for First Dates Ireland looks slightly worse than anything we’ve ever experienced.

And by ‘slightly’ we mean ‘definitely.’

Tonight marks the return of the popular Irish dating show and for the first time, diners are going on double dates.

Leigh is set up with Samuel while his friend, Niamh, heads off somewhere else.

However, things absolutely do not get off to the greatest start between the lads… and not just because Samuel’s celebrity crush is none other than Leo Varadkar.

Samuel tells Leigh that he thinks he’s “a bit infatuated” with himself.

Leigh says that he’s not offended by that comment.

Samuel then apologises for “being mean” and heads off to the bathroom to call his mate.

Leigh does the same and gets Niamh over to tell her that he wants to leave.

Both of the lads simultaneously admit that they hate each other and don’t want to continue with the date.

It’s all a bit much.

We won’t know exactly how this date ends until tonight, but we can probably go ahead and assume that it did not end well.

First Dates Ireland airs tonight at 9.30pm on RTÉ2.
