Plans for the rest of the night, Old Sport?

Course you don’t, it’s Wednesday.

What else would you be at other than settling down to watch yourself some Netflix?

Nothing, that’s what, so you may as well grab yourself an old fashioned, park the LaSalle, and place your cigarette in one of those long stick things, because we’re about to take a streaming-based trip to the roaring ’20s.

Because The Great Gatsby is now on Netflix, if you hadn’t realised that already.

The film, directed by Baz Luhrmann of Romeo + Juliet fame, follows Nick Carraway (played by the always delightful Tobey Maguire) as he finds himself in the fictional Long Island town of West Egg.

While there, Nick is intrigued by the parties, extravagance, and mystery of one of his neighbours, a man named Jay Gatsby.

Gatsby (played by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio) befriends Nick when he finally gets an invite to one of his parties. Nick is surprised to learn that he and Gatsby actually have a lot in common.

He’s even more surprised to learn that Gatsby isn’t just throwing these parties for the good of his health, but to garner the attention of Daisy (played by Carey Mulligan), the woman he’s been in love with for quite some time.

The Baz Luhrmann adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic is every bit as gaudy, over the top, and excessive as you’d expect it to be.

The film is far from perfect – in fact, some would go so far as to say it isn’t even all that good as it meanders along, jumping clumsily from shot to shot as if it was thrown together in a week – but it’s a nice watch if you’re a Leo fan.

Or if you just want something easy to throw on after a hard day’s work.

Take your pick.
