Grab the popcorn, cancel your plans, etc.

Sweet Home Alabama is on TV tonight and that’s the rest of our Saturday night sorted.

The early noughties romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsey and Josh Lucas – and has been one of our go-tos ever since its release in 2002.

Which is why we were particularly excited when we saw that it was going to be on Comedy Central at 8pm tonight.

It follows a successful New York fashion designer who is excitedly planning her wedding – but has to return to her home town in Alabama to persuade her first husband to sign the papers to finalise their divorce.

However, seeing her childhood sweetheart stirs up old feelings, leaving the bride-to-be in a quandary over her future.

It comes as Josh Lucas, who starred in the 2002 romantic comedy as Jake Perry, has teased a possible sequel last year – and the chance to see what the childhood soulmates Melanie and Jake are up to nowadays.

Although, he noted, whether or not the sequel goes ahead is down to one person in particular: co-star Reese Witherspoon.

“I’m up for it. I know Reese’s said she is as well. The director [Andy Tennant] is absolutely up for it. I spoke to him about it a couple of times recently,” he told Entertainment Tonight.

“So look, I throw it out to you, Reese. I think the person who’s the one to put it together is Reese, so I’m hoping. Who knows? She’s got a lot of irons in the fire to say the least. Hopefully this is one of them.”

He also said that director Andy Tennant “has a script and a development he has done,” although that “doesn’t mean” anything has been officially confirmed just yet.
