The BBC want to make another Planet Earth

Yesssss!

Laura Holland

Looks like there will probably be another Planet Earth.

Sunday marked the end of the second installment of Planet Earth.

The first series of the nature documentary, which is narrated by David Attenborough, was released in 2006 and it took ten years for a follow up.

Just when we were expecting it to be finished for good with the latest series, the producer of the show has given us a glimmer of hope that there will be another Planet Earth. Before we get too excited, though, we’ll probably be waiting as long as the last.

Mike Gunton, the producer, told the Guardian that they would be “crazy to count it out” but that “we’d also be crazy to say it will be here in three years or even five years’ time.”

He added, “We love working with Sir David and I think he loves working with us, and we want that to last as long as possible.”

Mike also said that with David Attenborough turning 90 earlier this year it has sparked a conversation about who might take over from him once he decides to finish.

Mike said it would be pointless to try, saying:

“The head of department said: ‘So, first on the agenda: a replacement for David Attenborough. We need to think about who is going to take over his mantle.’

“That was almost 30 years ago. And if you had any unit meeting today you would probably ask the same question, and you would probably also have the same answer. Which is that you can’t [replace him], and it’s almost pointless trying to.”

“We love working with him and I think he loves working with us, and we want that to last as long as possible. When he decides he doesn’t want to do it any more, we will have to rethink how we make these programmes – because you can’t replace him.”
