The upcoming fourth series will cover Princess Diana's struggle with bulimia and the scenes are said to be quite graphic - so graphic, in fact, that Netflix thought it was necessary to release a warning to viewers.

Apparently three of the episodes of the new series will include content warnings before the show starts.

This season of the royal series will cover the years between 1979 and 1990 and feature the engagement of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. This is the first time that the show has depicted Diana, played by Emma Corrin, in its run.

The episodes will go in to detail about the Princess' struggle with the eating disorder, which she developed after getting engaged to Prince Charles.

A Netflix spokesman told Mirror Online: "The Crown producers worked closely with the eating disorder charity, BEAT, to ensure that their portrayal of Princess Diana’s bulimia was both accurate to the disorder and sensitively handled.

"And when viewers watch the series on Netflix they will see warning cards at the beginning of the episodes giving details of how to seek help if required."

According to reports, the series includes a scene in which Diana is seen violently vomiting after her marriage to the Prince starts to fall apart.

An insider revealed to The Sun: "This is an unprecedented move by the creators of the drama. After all, it has previously featured scenes of war, a suicide bid, and will even include a terrorist attack in the new series.

"But they have never chosen to issue a warning over these potentially disturbing images. It’s a reflection of how explicit the imagery is and how sensitively they are treating it."

The new series of The Crown will be available on Netflix from November 15.
