The movie may not be out for another two months.
But the first reactions to Little Women are in – and people are raving about the “wonderful” and “heartfelt” adaptation.
Greta Grewig’s take on the coming-of-age novel by Louisa May Alcott has been hailed as “charming”, “gorgeously original” and “passionately faithful”, with plenty of Oscar Best Picture talk already sounding the film.
The people who were attending the recent screenings also praised the cast, with Florence Pugh being called “astonishing” for her portrayal of Amy March; and Saoirse Ronan said to deliver “her most layered performance yet” as Jo March.
The film also stars Timothée Chalamet, Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Eliza Scanlen and James Norton.

The last three Best Picture winners—MOONLIGHT, THE SHAPE OF WATER, GREEN BOOK—end happily and portrayed the world as ultimately hopeful.

For my money, the MVP in LITTLE WOMEN is Florence Pugh. Hot off of MIDSOMMAR, Pugh is having a great year, and she’s hilarious and winning as Amy, the character best served by Gerwig’s structural gambits.
