The first official trailer for the Baywatch movie has been released. The reboot of the popular '90s TV show stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra. We've been drip fed bits of information about the movie throughout the year while they were filming but this is the first time we get to see a glimpse of the action.
As a fan of the Baywatch TV series I'm a little surprised by the movie. The movie itself looks impressive but it's definitely not what I expected for a reboot of such an iconic TV show.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still excited for it and will go see it but just a warning to other fans of the TV show not to be expecting a replica.
Back in the day, the show centred around Mitch Buchanan, who was originally played by David Hasselhoff, and the Los Angeles lifeguards as they went about their daily duties of keeping the beaches clean and safe for visitors. Usually it revolved around some serious incident out in the ocean with someone needing to be rescued.
While the movie takes inspiration from the show in its plot, which sees Mitch Buchanan (now played by Dwayne Johnson) and newbie Matt Brody (Zac Efron) try to uncover the reason behind a body washing up on shore, it's taken it in a new direction completely.
The movie has changed what we rememeber of Baywatch. It's taken all the good parts out and made it into more of an action movie than anything else. They've also thrown in some comedy for good measure.
I can appreciate that when Dwayne Johnson is involved it's the perfect excuse to throw in some action but for me it jars with the overall feel of Baywatch and ruins whatever memory us fans have.
It has some of the cheesiest lines and moments which would have never featured in the original series.
To confuse the situtation even more, some of the original cast are going to make cameos in the new movie. David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson will make an appearance but with Dwayne now playing David's role it's not yet know what way it will play out.
