The gripping first trailer for Netflix’s American Son is here

Keeley Ryan

Netflix have released the trailer for the gripping new mystery, American Son.

The movie is an adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name, and will be released on the streaming service on November 1.

Set in a police station in South Florida on a stormy night, the movie follows  mother Kendra Ellis-Connor (Kerry Washington) as she paces anxiously in the waiting room, trying to piece together what may have happened to her missing son.

Faced with a series of infuriating unanswered questions, she navigates a system of unconscious bias, interweaving perspectives, and a tense marital dynamic with her ex-husband (Steven Pasquale) as they try to uncover the truth about their son’s whereabouts.

Washington and Pasquale are both reprising their roles form the play, as are Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee.

American Son is an emotional depiction of modern day race dynamics and systemic tensions.

American Son arrives on Netflix on November 1, but in the meantime you can check out the trailer below.

Washington previously told EW that she was drawn to the role as it was “about as different from [Scandal’s] Olivia Pope as you could possibly get.”

She said:

“She was such a huge challenge for me as an actress to spend seven or eight years playing somebody and then try to have the pendulum swing in the total opposite direction. She is not — there is no Prada in this one folks, sorry.”
