This is Christopher Nolan’s third time casting the British actor in one of his movies, previously picking him for the role of Eames in Inception and Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. And one thing that remains the same for Hardy’s character in Dunkirk as it did in The Dark Knight Rises is that his face is pretty much completely covered.Tom Hardy works best when his face is 80% covered pic.twitter.com/L9wgbjEu9w

However, Nolan says there is a reason for his decision.Tom Hardy has such a pretty face that every movie he's in has to come up with reasons to cover it up so people don't just kiss him on sight.

“I was pretty thrilled with what he did in The Dark Knight Rises with two eyes, a couple of eyebrows and a bit of a forehead,” the director told the Press Association. “So, I thought, ‘Let’s see what he can do with no forehead, no real eyebrows and maybe one eye’.”While Nolan’s humorous response might be true, the character’s role as a Royal Air Force pilot might have also played a part.
