Aside from brilliant original programming like Master of None, BoJack Horseman and House of Cards, Netflix has been a firm advocate of some truly remarkable and powerful documentaries.

If you haven’t seen the like of 13th, Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom or Making A Murderer then you’re really in for a treat – in fact, here’s a very good  list of the brilliant documentaries available – and the streaming giant has even more good news to celebrate.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have unveiled a shortlist of 10 contenders in the Oscar Documentary Short Subject category for the 89th Academy Awards. The Academy’s Documentary Branch culled the list from 61 eligible entries and two of the nominated films are currently available to watch on Netflix, The White Helmets and Extremis.

The White Helmets tells the story of a group of  indomitable first responders that risk their lives to rescue victims from the rubble pf the daily airstrikes that pound civilians in Syria.

Extremis provides viewers with an up close and personal view of the wrenching emotions that accompany end-of-life decisions as doctors, patients and families in a hospital ICU face harrowing choices

Here’s the list of the 10 features that are all vying for the Oscar in the category of Documentary Short Subject.
