Two sequels to The Exorcist are in the works

Ellen Fitzpatrick

The 1973 classic is back.

The Exorcist is a classic, but we’ve always been craving more from the film, and it seems our wishes are being granted.

Reprising her role as Chris MacNeil, Ellen Burstyn is making a return to the horror film in a huge sequel of the 1973 movie.

Starring alongside Tony-winning actor Leslie Odom Jr, who is playing a father seeking out Ellen’s character when his daughter becomes possessed.

Universal Studios is set to pay $400 million for the rights to the new trilogy, and The Guardian is saying that the newest of the films will be released in cinemas in October 2023.

They added that the rest of the films could be aired on Universal’s US streaming service Peacock.

And with David Gordon Green, the mastermind behind the new Halloween trilogy with Jamie Lee Curtis, set to direct the new Exorcist film, we’re definitely in for a treat.

The original film was a box office hit, raking up $440 million and winning an Oscar for best adapted screenplay, along with Ellen nabbing a nomination for her leading role.

Sequels and prequels of The Exorcist have been trialled over the years, but fans of the original have never been too keen on them, but these are set to be ignored when it comes to these new sequels.

A television series back in 2016 ran for two seasons, starring Geena Davis, and acted as a sequel to the films.

This isn’t the only horror film news, Netflix is going for a $450m deal to retain the rights for the next two Knives Out films as well as the Scream franchise being relaunched by Paramount.
