US Vs UK: Here’s what nationality Harry and Meghan’s future babas will be

Yes, we're getting slightly ahead of ourselves.

love actually

It’s not that all that straightforward.

Given that they’re only together 18 months and that they only announced their engagement this week, we’re getting slightly ahead of ourselves with talk of babies, but still.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are something of a first in modern times – a British royal couple from different countries.

The international element of their relationship is part of what makes them such an interesting couple but it has got us thinking about what that means for their future children.

We know that as well as getting baptised and confirmed before she marries Harry, Meghan is going to apply for British citizenship.

The process could take up to five years and there’s no back door through the system, even for future royals – Kensington Palace has confirmed as much to TMZ.

It’s good to hear that she won’t be getting any preferential treatment but it also means that Meghan and Harry could become parents before her citizenship comes through.

If that does happen, their child would be unique among kids in the royal family as he or she would hold dual citizenship between the UK and the US.

Harry’s communication’s secretary Jason Knauf has confirmed that Meghan will be a US citizen until she gets her UK citizenship but interestingly would not comment on whether she’ll hold onto it afterwards.

If she does renounce it, her kids will be British citizens only.
