Viewers in bits over emotional Derry Girls finale special

Ellen Fitzpatrick

What a show.

Wednesday night saw the finale of Derry Girls in an extra special way, with a one hour long special.

After three seasons and one special, we said goodbye to the girls (and wee James) in an emotional bonus episode taking place a year on from Tuesday’s season finale.

Set in Derry during the Troubles in the 90s, the final episode took place during the Good Friday Agreement, which happened to coincide with Orla and Erin’s 18th.

Naturally, with this show, there was a tonne of heartwarming moments, with the series ending in a polling station before showing modern day New York.

And one cameo left viewers absolutely shocked as Chelsea Clinton is seen opening the door to a postman delivering a 20 year old letter.

The gang had sent it in the series two finale when her dad and former US President Bill Clinton was coming to visit Derry, and to say fans were shocked to see her in the show would be an understatement.

Taking to social media, one person wrote: “The power derry girls has to get a literal Chelsea Clinton cameo to close out the series…this show is truly unmatched.”

Another wrote: “Without doubt the most moving piece of TV I’ve ever seen & Chelsea Clinton.”

A third said: “Omg Chelsea Clinton @ChelseaClinton That’s quite the end.”

Speaking about her surprise cameo, Chelsea herself said: “Thanks to Lisa McGee’s incredible talent, and that of the wonderful cast and crew of Derry Girls, people around the world have been able to better understand and relate to a hugely significant and important period of history in Northern Ireland and for the world.

“Like many, I am a big fan of the series, and I was honoured to be able to appear in the very special final episode. I hope people enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed being a part of it!”

She wasn’t the only famous face in the final episode as Liam Neeson returned as Chief Constable Byers from earlier in the season to give his vote in the referendum.

Sharing a photo with Liam, creator Lisa McGee wrote: “Thank you for watching. I’m quite emotional tonight so don’t have any words. Enjoy this picture of the day Liam Neeson came in, when I wore my shitty filming blacks but stuck a bow on my head cos… Hollywood.”
