15 new movie releases we’re looking forward to in 2020

Jade Hayden

Ah, 2020.

It’s here, folks. And it’s not going anywhere.

So instead of lamenting the fact that we’ve just entered a new decade and potentially have very little to show for it, why not get pumped for some new movies that we’re going to be graced with instead?

Lots to come. Lots to look forward to.

1. 1917 (dir. Sam Mendes)

Detailing two British’s soldiers attempt to deliver an important message during the First World War, 1917 is a war story of epic proportions set to make big money at the box office this January.

Think Saving Private Ryan, but sadder, probably.

Release: January 10, 2020.

2. The Rhythm Section (dir. Reed Morano)

Starring the wonderful Blake Lively and shot partially in Dublin, The Rhythm Section is a thrilling tale of a revenge and justice.

Based on the novel of the same name, the film gives audiences more of the Lively they loved from A Simple Favour  – with a whole lot less of the glamour.

Release: January 31, 2020.

3. Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (dir. Cathy Yan)

Despite the multiple failings of Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is still a character we can get behind.

This upcoming movie focuses solely on her, as she struggles to save a young impressionable girl from an evil crime lord in Gotham.

Release: February 7, 2020.

4. Parasite (dir. Bong Joon-ho)

A South Korean black comedy horror/thriller unlike anything you’ve seen before, Parasite became one of the most talked about foreign films of last year.

Go into it not knowing anything about it. It’s worth it.

Release: February 7, 2020.

5. The Photograph (dir. Stella Meghie)

Romantic? Comedic? Detailing a series of intertwining love stories with lovely people over the course of a few years?

Also released on Valentine’s Day? Sure you might as well.

Release: February 14, 2020

6. Legally Blonde 3 (dir. Jamie Suk)

It’s here, lads. Finally.

The third instalment of the Reese Witherspoon classic (yes, classic) is dropping this year and yes, you will be hitting up your local cinema house to see it the second it’s released.

Release: TBA (no official trailer yet).

7. Emma (dir. Autumn de Wilde)

Based on Jane Austen’s classic nineteenth century novel, Emma is – like most films this year, apparently -n being re-imagined for a new audience, featuring Anya Taylor Joy nonetheless.

De Wilde’s directorial debut, expect love affairs, romantic meddling, and a star-studded cast to drive it all home.

Release: February 14, 2020.

8. The Invisible Man (dir. Leigh Whannel)

Elisabeth Moss is hanging up her Handmaid’s robes for one feature length film only, as she turns paranoid widow in this sci-fi thriller from the creator of the Saw franchise.

Generic, probably predictable, horror at its best.

Release: February 28, 2020.

9. A Quiet Place II (dir. John Krasinski)

Just when you thought they couldn’t do it again, they go and do it again.

But this time, with Cillian Murphy. Sporting a beard, nonetheless.

Release: March 20, 2020.

10. Mulan (dir. Niki Caro)

The live-action remake of the Disney classic, Mulan retells the iconic and inspiring story of one woman’s attempt to do her family proud, defend her own honour, and prove that you don’t need to be a man to be a hero.

Release: March 27, 2020.

11. Black Widow (dir. Cate Shortland)

Another one for the superhero fans as Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Black Widow for her first solo movie.

Focusing on her shady past with the Russian government, the film will finally give fans the Natasha taste they’ve been craving for so long.

Release: May 1, 2020.

12. The Woman in the Window (dir. Joe Wright)

Starring Amy Adams and Julianne Moore, The Woman in the Window is a story of deception, deceit, and the shit that you see when you stare out the window all day.

Release: May 15, 2020.

13. Wonder Woman 1984 (dir. Patty Jenkins)

It’s Gal Gadot. But in the ’80s.

There’ll be big hair, neon lights, and yet another female superhero saving the world. You truly do love to see it.

Release: June 5, 2020.

14. Tenet (dir. Christopher Nolan)

C. Nolan’s back with the time travel again, and this time John David Washington’s trying to save the world by stopping World War Three from happening.

Expect mind binding twists and, of course, Michael Caine.

Release: July 17, 2020.

15. The Witches (dir. Robert Zemeckis)

Roald Dahl’s literary classic, re-imagined. And starring Anne Hathaway.

C’mon.

Release: October 16, 2020 (no official trailer).
