Pretty summer cocktails you need to try out this weekend

Her

Brought to you by Dunnes Stores.

It’s finally Saturday.

And you know what that means… Yes it’s the weekend, yes we finally get a lie-in but that’s not what we’re talking about.

Ladies, today is World Gin Day!

And naturally enough we couldn’t be more excited.

We think that it’s only right that we celebrate this momentous day with a little toast to the gin gods so we’ve scoured the internet to find some gorgeous summer cocktails for you to try out this Saturday night.

But that’s not even the best news because Dunnes Stores are currently running a fantastic spirits sale in store so you’ll be able to get €5 of selected premium spirits until June 26th.

The brilliant offer is available on lots of our favourite gins, whiskies and brandies like Jameson Black Barrel, Gunpowder Irish Gin and of course the fabulous Hendricks.

What makes this offer even better is that it is all included in their amazing Shop & Save promotion – so you’ll get €10 off if you’re spending €50 on groceries when you use your voucher.

Don’t have a voucher? Don’t worry! Dunnes Stores give out a €10 Shop & Save voucher with every €50 you spend on groceries.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to whip up some yummy cocktails.

Here are some of our favourite recipes.

Strawberry gin lemonade from How Sweet it is.

Ingredients:

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons strawberry puree
  • 1 to 2 ounces gin
  • 3 ounces strawberry juice
  • 4 ounces lemonade
  • Sliced strawberries and lemons for garnish

Strawberry puree

  • 2 cups quartered strawberries
  • 1/2 cup water

Method:

Fill each glass with a few spoonfuls of the strawberry puree. Fill the glass with ice. Add 1 to 2 ounces of gin over the ice and stir it into the strawberry puree. Pour a few ounces of the strawberry juice in next, then finish filling the rest of the glass up with the lemonade. Garnish with a few lemon slices and strawberries. Add a straw and serve!

Strawberry puree

Blend together the strawberries and water until smooth and blended. Pour half of the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to strain any solids. You have your strawberry juice! Keep the other half of the puree to fill up the bottom of the glasses. This will leave you with extra, so you can store it in the fridge in a sealed container for a few days!

Pomegranate whiskey sour from Self Proclaimed Foodie.

Ingredients:

Simple Syrup:
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds
Cocktail:
  • 4 ounces bourbon whiskey
  • 2 ounces lemon juice
  • 2 ounces pomegranate simple syrup

Method:

  1. Make a simple syrup by heating water and granulated sugar over medium heat until all sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat, add pomegranate seeds, and allow to cool completely. Run through a blender and then strain through fine mesh strainer. Discard seed solids and keep the pink syrup.
  2. To make the cocktail, combine whiskey, lemon juice and pomegranate simple syrup in a shaker with ice. Vigorously shake until well combined, about 20 seconds. Strain into a low ball glass with extra large ice cubes.
