You usually spot them when you’re pulling on a tshirt, or shaving in the shower, but little skin tags can be irritating to look at on the landscape of your skin.
While we might have our own theories, skin tags happen when skin cells grow too rapidly upwards in one area of the skin.
Dermatologist David Colbert explained to InStyle magazine:
“Skin tags come from overactive epidermis cells. The skin controls the way it grows, so you can consider them a small area that has lost control, so the cells grow upward.
“Friction can trigger them, as well as rapid weight loss, rapid weight gain, and sometimes having diabetes, but that isn’t the case for all people. Once you’ve grown a skin tag, your necklace or something that rubs up against it can actually rip them off, which definitely isn’t a good thing.”
While the tags might be harmless, they’re not necessarily something you should aim to remove yourself.
While you might find a series of creams, ointments and online answers on the best way to detag yourself, Colbert recommends ditching Google and going to a doctor for a quick procedure:
“A skin tag is really something that should be addressed by your doctor, either through surgery or a laser.
“There’s nothing in a cream that is going to stop them or remove them.”
