10 things Irish people living abroad miss most

Alice Murray

This article is brought to you by Crunchie.

We’re a nation of nomads.

We love to travel but no matter where we go there are always a few things we miss about our motherland.

Whether you’re in Spain for a week or Australia for a year there are a few home comforts that you will automatically start to long for.

Here are the top 10 things Irish people miss when they are abroad.

1. The Coast

In the wise words of Westlife, ‘You never miss the water until it’s gone.’ We never really appreciated how lucky we were to live within driving distance from the coast. We’re all islanders at heart and hate the thought of being landlocked.

2. Decent sausages

There’s nothing like an Irish fry after a big night out. When you go abroad it’s just not the same. We don’t know what they put into their sausages but they just aren’t right. Denny all the way!

3. Proper tea

Ah, the elixir of life. There’s nothing that a nice cup of tea can’t fix but what happens when you find yourself without your favourite brew? Whether it’s Lyons or Barry’s there is nothing more heart-breaking than drinking crap tea.

4. Having St.Patrick’s Day off work

Living in Ireland doesn’t always guarantee a day off on Paddy’s Day but spending our national holiday abroad can sometimes be a depressing affair. Watching everyone go to work like it’s just an ordinary day is completely soul destroying.

5. Being able to ring home

You never thought you would miss those annoying phone calls/ texts from your Mammy, but since you moved abroad there’s nothing you’d love more than to be able to pick up the phone and hear all the goss. Skype is great but scheduling a conversation with your family days in advance can be a pain in the ass and don’t get us started on dealing with their dodgy Irish wifi connection.

6. Delis

All hail the Spar deli! Where else can you go for a chicken fillet roll when you’re feeling really low? Delis just aren’t as common in other countries and quite frankly it’s a sin. Pre-packaged sandwiches? That’s sacrilege!

7. Tayto

The crisps of the Gods. Tayto crisps just can’t be beaten. If you’ve never panic bought them in bulk at an airport, can you even really call yourself Irish?

8. Accents

Exploring the world is cool and all but there’s nothing like coming home to a familiar accent. During your time abroad people will undoubtedly mock the way you speak. After a while, you will  just want to be with people who understand what you’re saying.

9. Proper chocolate

Irish Cadbury’s is like no other. It’s so creamy, so tasty, so…Irish. Yes, just like many other things it just tastes better when it comes from home. You know it’s true.

1o. The slang

Ask an American ‘what’s the craic?’ and they are just about as likely to get you arrested for drugs possession than to tell you their news. Some of our expressions can cause a lot of raised eyebrows abroad, as well as our tendency to slag each other senseless.

There are some things that are just better at home.
