10 Things… That Will Always Happen At An Irish Debs

So you finished your Leaving Cert and you are all excited about the prospect of going to college, but there is one last event you must attend in the school calendar and that is the wonderful debs. Here are ten things that will always happen on that night.

1. Someone misses the bus to the debs

Oh God, has anyone seen Michael? Wasn't he supposed to be on the bus? Well, we can't turn around now. Keep drinking.

2. Someone is always drunk by the meal

Generally because you all decided that at about 18, you are really able to handle your drink and began drinking on the way to the event, someone is definitely legless by the time you sit down for the meal.

3. Someone breaks up with their boyfriend

When you are young and in love, you don't think you have the rest of your life to meet someone and settle down. No, there are some who settled down with their boyfriend in first year and by Leaving Cert, they couldn't stand the sight of each other. It doesn't come out until the Debs night though, of course. Drama, drama, drama.

4. Someone generally gets thrown out

Hotels hate hosting debs nights, they make no secret of that and it is generally because they will have to deal with about 150 very drunk teenagers, at least thirty of which will be thrown head first out the emergency doors... if they're lucky.

5. Two people who were mortal enemies in school become best friends

"I never really hated you, I was just so jealous!!" Or the flipside occurred, two friends became mortal enemies. "Did you just shift my boyfriend?! I SAW YOU!!"

6. Someone loses their virginity

Think about how young we were and that by the time we reached debs night, a lot of us had already lost our virginity (sorry parents, but it's true. You should really keep your kids locked up). However, there is always one and the debs night is THE night.

7. Someone gets sick straight after the meal

It might be the same person who got off the bus twisted drunk, or it might be that lovely girl who studied her ass off for her Leaving Cert and never stepped outside her front door before that night. That tequila, along with that BEAUTIFUL turkey dinner was coming back up whether she wanted it to or not.

8. All the girls take their hair down at about 11.30pm

Man, up-styles really, really hurt. All those pins DIGGING into your scalp. Look, the pictures are over and done with, I'm taking this thing down.

9. Someone loses their shoes

"I can't find my other shoe!!! I can't find my... oh wait, here it is! Man, I am SO DRUNK after my two Corky's." Ah Corky's...

10. Someone misses the bus home

Oh god, we lost Michael again. When we all get off the bus, his mother is going to go MENTAL! Oh, act sober.
