10 Things…You’ll Always Need Your Dad For

Here's to you Dad!

Cathy Donohue

We featured a piece a couple of weeks ago about Mammies and how we rely on them for certain things.

With that in mind, we thought it only fair to devote a piece to Dads and why they’re also very special.

Here’s a couple of times you might find yourself shouting “Daaaaaaaaad”.

Just Hilarious

We have to credit them with some brilliant one-liners and one Her.ie staffer has cried laughing after a chat with her Dad. On one occasion, this particular Dad quite seriously asked why Beyoncé was shouting about being a single lady “why didn’t he just put a damn ring on it?”, the best thing is that half the time they don’t even realise how funny they actually are.

Handyman

They might not actually know what they’re doing but the main thing is, they will do their best to help you. Change a tyre, put up shelves, fix a lock… you might know how to do it yourself but if you don’t, it’s good to know you can call on your Dad.

Holding Out For a Hero

Romance isn’t always easy and there might be days when you feel your relationship is doomed or you’re destined to be single forever. It’s times like these that your Dad can remind you that are good guys in the world and although you might have to kiss a few frogs, Prince Charming is out there… somewhere.

Driving Lessons

Many of us started to drive under the watchful eye of a parent. If it wasn’t Mam, it was Dad depending on who you could persuade to take you out for a spin. So he might have complained that the experience was terribly stressful, but he continued to teach you. Because of that, he’s a bit of a legend.

Ah go on…

You know the scenario. “Mam, can I have/do/go?” The answer is a flat no. Dad has a word with her and before you know it he has persuaded her that your request is in fact a great idea. RESULT.

A “Dad” Hug

It’s long been said that Dads and their daughters have a special bond. Seeing his daughter upset is enough to make any man angry and although they might not say a lot, a hug and a pat on the back is sometimes enough to make things okay again.

Monsters-Inc

Stories

These often start along the lines of “well, when I was young” or “did I ever tell you about?” and that’s it, he’s off. While you might get bored of these particular stories, we definitely prefer them to “you paid HOW MUCH for that bag?”

Wise words

As well as making us laugh, we have to hand it to our Dads for coming up with the goods when you need advice. “What’s for you won’t pass you”, “it’ll all come out in the wash” and “he was never good enough for you anyway” are some of the classics.

Homework

You may have passed this stage but we had to include it for nostalgia’s sake. From testing your spellings to working out Maths problems, Dad had your back when it came to homework. This also applies to Mammies, it’s different in every household.

Personal Chauffeur

The lifts may have dwindled now you’re a little older but chances are you’ll still expect Dad to pick you up and drop you off in times of need. As for when you were younger, we’re pretty sure you heard the classic line “What am I, your personal chauffeur?” more than once.

Thanks Dad, you rock.
