The college year is practically upon us and you know what that means, life experiences… amongst other things.
After opening your very own student bank account (newbies if you open and use an account with KBC this September you’ll receive €100 into your account- more details here) it is time to sort out that all important accommodation issue.
The decor of a typical student house is unlike any other you’ll come across in your adult years. It can be quite the culture shock, but you’ll get into the swing of things pretty quickly. Here are the ten things you’ll find in every student house.

1. Free stuff from campus
Need a pen? You’ll have one in every colour? New keyring? You’ll have trouble fitting your new set of house keys. Though not sufficient enough to make a meal, you’ll suddenly have an abundance of Nutri-grain bars, packets of Taytos and cans of Redbull… At least they can combat the munchies for a while.
2. The next best thing to sliced bread
The Toaster. Student life just wouldn’t be the same without this staple kitchen item.
3. The remains of a good takeaway
When all else fails, takeaway is your best friend. Handy, considering that you manage to accidentally burn everything in the oven…
4. A complete randomer
You all went out for drinks last night. Some people came back, you dragged out the out-of-tune guitar you’ve owned since fifth class and there was a rousing rendition of Galway Girl. The next day, not one person who actually lives with you recognises the dude who slept on the couch, but he’s full of the joys and making tea to beat the band, so what harm.
5. Teabags
When you move out of home for the first time you begin to slowly realise just how much home comforts you took for granted, one of which is the holy grail in every Irish household… Teabags. After running out of the blessed bags of life elixir once, you will NOT make that mistake again, and all four housemates will have a 120 bag box stashed just in case. Now, whose turn was is to buy milk?
6. In an instant…
Instant foods, perfect for the quick meal. The Cup-a-soup is handy for when there’s no decent food in the house. You might as well just invest in the company considering how many are likely to be consumed in a college year.
Another meal that requires minimum expertise, the frozen pizza. It is a classic. Chances are though that this will happen at least once…
7. Pasta with everything…
Pasta pretty much features on every college student’s shelf. Like the pot noodle, all you need is a bit of hot water and you are on your way. And, if you cook it right you get to use fancy words like “al dente.” Pasta expert alert.
8. Traffic cone
Standard.
9. Leaflets
From takeaway menus, discount deals to local community group meetings… Your fridge will also double as the home to every leaflet known to mankind.
10. Posters
We have all held onto ticket stubs and concert posters for the memories. Election posters however, we’re not exactly sure what they’re for and in the majority of student households you’ll be sure to find one. There is something about having a large image of a person’s face in your living room to make the place feel homely.
