Well ladies, it’s that time of the year again – Debs season is upon us and honestly? Well…it’s starting to get more and more expensive (which is bad news for all you Mammies out there!).
According to some new research conducted by Debenhams, young Debutants across the country are spending hundreds of euros preparing for their Debs ball.
Can you remember how much money you spent on your own Debs? A quick hands up around the Her.ie office reveals that the majority of us (who would have attended our debs in the past five/six years) spent around €200 altogether and most of that cash went on the all-important dress. We did our own hair, make-up and fake tan.
According to Debenhams, young women across the country are now spending an average sum of €695 on beauty treatments, Debs dress and accessories to make sure they look good and stand out on the big night. To put this figure into perspective, €695 could almost get you two weekend tickets for Electric Picnic. In short, it’s a lot of money.

The Debs is getting more and more expensive as the years pass...
Debenhams are reporting an increase of 45 per cent when it comes to enquiries about bookings for make-up and beauty treatments in store, with spray tans, manicures, make-up and hair appointments at the top of the list.
“The Debs is such a huge tradition among teens in Ireland and girls want to ensure they look the part. There is a big element of competition at play, so it’s vital that girls find the perfect dress, with teens and parents willing to pay big money to dazzle and outshine their classmates,” said Karen Nason, a spokeswoman for Debenhams.
“At Debenhams we notice a huge increase in girls coming in to book make-up appointments from August onwards, with further girls enquiring about make-up and application. Eyelashes, nails and full make-up play an important role in the Debs night,” she added.
What do you think ladies? How much would you be willing to spend on your daughter’s Debs?
