So THIS is what actually happens to lost airport luggage

Cathy Donohue

One of life’s great mysteries.

Okay so, slight exaggeration but if you’ve ever wondered what happens to luggage left at an airport or on a plane, you might be interested to hear the answer.

On the unfortunate occasion that luggage does go missing in transit, from when it’s been checked in until when you reach your destination, most of us will badger the airline relentlessly until we get that precious suitcase back.

However, for the odd person who just gives up on the luggage completely, it’s kept for 90 days and if remains unclaimed after that period, apparently it gets auctioned off.

Obviously, different airlines have different policies but according to The Telegraph, airports keep the ‘lost’ luggage for the designated amount of time before it’s auctioned off in aid of charity.

Don’t get too excited for the items sold often include “dirty clothing and bags” as an employee of Wellers, an auction house that often receives items from airports, told the publication.
