It's officially a term now.

The term to be a ‘catfish’ – someone who pretends to be someone they’re not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities – has been officially added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

‘Catfishing’ became popularised by a 2010 documentary, after Nev Schulman documented a romantic relationship with a young woman that he had met on Facebook, only to discover he’d been conned during the entire relationship.

The documentary has since led to an MTV show, where viewers contact Nev and co-presenter Max Joseph to find the truth behind their online romances.

Max Joseph, a co-presenter of the MTV Show, took to Instagram yesterday to share the good news, posting:

“That’s right kids. “Catfish” and it’s modern definition have made it into the latest Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Finally! Via @claudiaglenn

Season three of the show is due to air in May.
