If you’re a student, chances are you’re currently experiencing the dreaded run-up to exam time. Whether it’s the Leaving Cert, your college summer exams or your thesis deadline, this time of year usually involves one thing: study, study and more study (ew!).
Now, we all know that getting yourself a decent education is super-important but you can’t deny it: the space of time between Easter and the day of your last exam is just completely minus the craic. You’re so busy doing final assignments and cramming facts into your brain that you don’t have time for anything else.
Like everything, it’s important to exercise a little bit of moderation when it comes to studying. It’s important to treat yourself to regular breaks to stop your brain from turning into absolute mush.
Here are the signs that tell you you’ve been hitting the books a little too hard...

Changing the pen you write with gives you a thrill
You get excited about switching pen colours: You’ve done so much underlining in your book that switching from blue pen to red pen gives you a little thrill.
Your friends think that you’ve moved away: You haven’t been answering their texts, they haven’t seen you for about five weeks, therefore they’re pretty sure that you’ve left the country.
Your parents are wary about talking to you: Every conversation you have with your parents ends with the sentence: ‘I’ll call back tomorrow when you’re in a better mood.’
The refresh button on your browser has never gotten so much use: Mainly because refreshing your Twitter feed every five seconds has become your new favourite method of procrastination.
Every single mug in the house is in your bedroom: What can you say? Tea breaks have become the only bit of joy in your day.
You have a weird bit of skin on your middle finger: Mainly because all you’ve been doing for the past two weeks is frantically rewriting your books in a desperate bid to memorise the information they contain.

Every single mug in the house has taken up residence in your bedroom
You are more energy drink than human: Because who has time for sleep when you’ve an exam?!
Your house has never been so clean: Nothing gets rid of that crazy ‘i-am-so-screwed-for-this-exam’ energy than hoovering the entire house, doing the washing and finally cleaning your bedroom.
You’ve forgotten how to interact with people: You’ve spent so long locked away in your bedroom revising that you actually don’t know how to speak to people in the real world anymore.
You’re having dreams about the things you’re studying: So even when you’re not studying, you’re still sort of studying.
