Plans to build a McDonalds in Greystones have been halted by a local school. Temple Carrig secondary school has disputed the pans to build the restaurant less than 100 meters from their entrance.
The school claims McDonald’s Restaurant Ltd. chose the location due to its proximity to three schools catering to approximately 1,800 students. The school also believes the decision to grant planning permission is contradictory to the national policy to address childhood obesity.
Part of the 2013 government published strategy entitled “Healthy Ireland” is to examine how schools can become more influential in dealing with childhood eating habits.
After Wicklow County Council granted permission for the development subject to various conditions, the school and others appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
Their appeal failed and the board granted approval subject to 11 conditions. The school is now pursuing a legal challenge.
