The beach from The Beach is closing down due to too much tourism

People ruin everything, don’t they?

If you haven’t seen The Beach, you need to go watch The Beach.

It’s got everything you’d ever want from a drama/thriller set in Thailand – Leo DiCaprio running about, a banging soundtrack, Tilda Swinton, a nice beach, a sound holiday vibe, and a bit at the end when Leo uses an internet cafe – the ultimate throwback.

It’s been 18 years now since The Beach came out but that hasn’t stopped people from wanting to go there and get their own slice of secret paradise.

… Except it’s not so secret anymore because about 5,000 people go there every day and the locals are getting a bit pissed off.

So pissed off, in fact, that the beach from The Beach (Maya Bay) is going to be closed from June to September from now on.

According to the Phuket Gazette, the beach will soon start turning tourists away because the sheer amount of them is destroying the ecosystem.

Aekawit Pinyothammanotai, president of the Krabi Industry Council, said that tourist companies will have to start informing departments about how many people they have coming to the beach every day.

Can you think of a better definition of paradise? ?

And if there are too many people booked to come, some will have to wait until the next day.

He said:

“The number of tourists travelling to Krabi beaches keeps increasing while the resources remain the same; this results in a lot of trash, noise and overcrowded boats that makes accidents more likely and long-term environmental damage unavoidable.”

As well as this, the beach will also close between June and September – the bay’s low season.

Despite this, some locals are still adamant that the beach should be closed to tourists altogether to give the resources enough time to recover.

Guess we’re going to have to find ourselves somewhere else this summer.
