You can now see how popular your name was in Ireland over the years

This is a very cool little tool…

The most popular baby names in Ireland for 2017 were released in Ireland recently by the Central Statistics Office.

It was revealed that James and Jack topped this list of the most popular baby boy names in Ireland last year, with Emily and Emma taking the top two spots for girls.

Yes, the most popular names from last year have been firm favourites among Irish parents for years now so it might not come as a huge surprise.

Top ten male baby names:

  1. Jack
  2. James
  3. Daniel
  4. Conor
  5. Sean

The top ten female baby names:

  1. Emily
  2. Emma
  3. Amelia
  4. Grace
  5. Sophie

But you may have been wondering, just how popular was your own name among baby names last year? How popular was little Leo, little Sarah or Karl depending on your spelling (for reference, there were ten babies named Carl last year, and eight named Karl).

There were 852 boys’ baby names used in 2017, and 1,107 girls’ names.

We know this because the CSO has put together this handy little tool where you can check back between the years of 1964 and 2017 and see how many people were named a particular name.

You can try out the tool on the CSO website and check how the pendulum of names has changed since the time you were born.
