Childhood memories: 8 of the best bits of an Irish summer

Her

Brought to you by NEW CLUB ZERO SUPER SPLIT- Great Taste, Zero Sugar.

Ah, the good old days. As much as we complain about the past, growing up in Ireland meant we all had some pretty decent childhood summers.

Remember getting a pound and feeling like you were the richest person in the world? Or when the biggest worry we had was whether or not we’d be allowed to go to the Gaeltacht and get the shift?

No matter what generation you were born in, chances are you can distinctly remember all the unique things that used to make up your Irish summer. Here are some of our favourites.

1. Getting your summer clothes down from the attic

As soon as Easter was over, your mammy used to disappear into the attic and bring down the suitcase full of summer clothes. You then had to spend at least an hour, trying on shorts and t-shirts to see if anything still fitted you properly. Oh, and it didn’t matter if it was freezing cold and lashing rain outside, once the suitcase was taken down, you wore your summer clothes. End of.

2. Staying out all day with your friends

As soon as Saved By The Bell was over in the mornings, you were out the door and having the craic with your friends. You only went indoors when you had to use the bathroom and/or eat something. In the evenings you used to hide so your mammy couldn’t find you and force you to come inside because it was “too late to be galavanting!”

3. Trying to score a pound so you could buy a Super Split

You asked your parents for money, you visited your granny and grandad, you hoped a family friend would call to the house and give you some money before they left – you tried everything to scrounge together enough money to buy one of those epic ice creams. While we can’t buy our favourite Super Splits anymore, Club Orange have just launched a brand new Club Zero Super Split drink, so we can relive our childhood just one more time. Oh, the memories.

4. Complaining about the heat

The best thing about the Irish summer? Complaining about the heat. If the temperatures hit anywhere near the 20C mark, everyone was up in arms giving out stink about the heat and feeling sorry for the poor farmer who needed the rain.

5. Begging to be brought to the beach

Every single day (without fail) you’d beg your mam or your dad to bring you and your friends to the beach. If you were lucky enough to actually get to the beach, you’d be heartbroken when it was time to go home.

6. The Community Games

Every summer, without fail, you’d get to compete in the Community Games. You’d a half day from school to run around the field and race against your friends and, if you were ridiculously good at sports, you might even get to Mosney.

7. Taking your vest off

As soon as May rolled around, you finally got to get rid of that itchy, scratchy, uncomfortable vest your mammy made you wear beneath your clothes in order to keep you warm. So long vest, we definitely don’t miss you!

8. Trying to run every family occasion into a water fight

Without fail. You would always have the water balloons and Super Soakers at hand just in case your ”fun uncles” decided to give in and take part (after considerable nagging of course).
