Clare is the most charitable county in Ireland

The people of county Clare are the most generous in Ireland when it comes to donating to their charity of choice, new figures have revealed.


New data from AIB reveals that the average person spends €6.64 every month on their chosen charity, 35 percent more than the second-most charitable county, Dublin, where people donate €4.32 a month to their charity of choice.

The revelation of Clare as the most charitable county is one of a series of insights compiled by AIB to mark the announcement that the AIB Mobile app now has over one million users throughout the Republic of Ireland.

AIB compiled anonymised and aggregated data from a sample size of approximately 1,000,000 active AIB Mobile App customers in a six-month period from December 2018 to May 2019, revealing a series of customer trends, including:

  • Irish people spend an average of €91 a month on restaurants and takeaways, with men (€103) more likely to spend money dining out than women (€79). People living in Dublin topped the list when it comes to spending money on dining out (€115), while people living in Monaghan spent the least (€59).
  • Irish people spend an average of €228 month on groceries. People living in Wicklow spent the most on groceries per month (€275), while people living in Donegal spent the least (€186).
  • Women spent an average of €119 on clothing per month in that six-month period, more than double the amount spent by men.
  • Irish people conducted 22 percent of their spending online, compared with 78 percent in store. People in Laois spent less online compared to any other county (19 percent of spending) while people in Louth did more shopping online than any other county (23 percent).
  • Irish people are spending an average of €12 a month on subscriptions and memberships, which equates to roughly one membership per person. Those between the ages of 45-49 (€18) and 50-54 (€17) spend slightly more on membership and subscriptions.
