“When the registrar arrived and said she couldn’t marry us, I thought she was joking. Then the situation began to sink in. "We had 60 guests expecting us to marry and I had to tell my fiancee our ceremony couldn’t go ahead. It was awful. She was devastated".The couple had to hang around for two hours as officials looked around for the paperwork which wasn't found until two days later. Even when it was found, it was established that it was null and void because it hadn't been completed properly. NIGHTMARE. However, Kirsty and John were complete heroes and decided to party on for the day that was in it. John told the publication:
“We decided to go ahead with the festivities in the hotel. After all, the wedding had cost us around £15,000 and it’s a lot of money to lose".The couple have arranged an alternative ceremony in Paisley later this month and hope Cumbria Council will pay for it. However, it's not possible for all the guests to make the journey again and so, the only people to see them marry will be Kirsty's mother and John's father. Here's what the council had to say about the issue:
“We offer our profuse and sincere apologises to Mr Canning and Miss Sloan for the stress and inconvenience caused by their wedding not taking place. We are working to identify suitable compensation and to resolve the matter to their satisfaction".
