Save money and do some good for the world around you by using simple measures to conserve energy in the home. If you’re not sure where to start – don’t worry! We’ll be bringing you one great energy-saving tip every day for the next few weeks.
Invest in insulation
Insulation helps to keep your home warm and means that when you do have the fire lighting or the central heating on, you won’t have to use as much electricity or fuel to get your living space feeling toasty.
We’re not going to lie, insulating your home can be a big job but it really is worth investing it. Any money you spend will be returned to you via electricity and home heating savings. Insulation is an investment that always, always pays off.
Insulating your attack can help you save up to 20 per cent on your home heating bill. A good rule of thumb is that if your attic insulation is currently less than 200mm thick, you should bulk it up and add more layers. You can do this by buying suitable materials like mineral wool, rock wool, sheeps wool, polystyrene, cellulose fire and multi-layered foil.
Another way that you can insulate your home is to choose double-glazed windows i you’re placing any windows in your home or upgrading. In most cases, the vast majority of heat lost from a home occurs through single glazed windows. If you upgrade your windows, you’ll make a significant energy saving.
Finally, if you’re replacing a hot water cylinder it’s always best to go for a cylinder that has a factory applied insulation. This type of insulaton will help to keep your water hotter for longer and is more effective at retaining heat than simply puting a jacket on your cylinder.
