Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, would have celebrated his birthday today. His greatest creation lives on through various new interpretations, series and films, the world's greatest private detective Sherlock Holmes.
However, our favourite adaption of the original books is the wonderful BBC series which first aired in 2010. With only six episodes which are nearly feature length, Sherlock has moved the detective into this century and proved that the stories can always be adapted and relevant.
Here are eight reasons you should be watching...
1. Benedict Cumberbatch
That is all... There nearly isn't any need to give six more reasons after this one.
2. The script.
More importantly, how does he remember all of that?
3. Modernising the Story
Moving the tales to modern London is a brilliant move on the part of the creators, making Holmes more relevant than ever.
4. The Sherlock and Watson relationship
Sure it always need the basis to start, but Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch give the relationship between the pair another level.
5. Feature-length episodes
Sherlock doesn't just demand you watch, it demands you invest. But it is entirely worth it.
6. The creators are writers on Doctor Who
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, creators of the series, conceived the idea while travelling to and from where Doctor Who was being filmed.
7. How Sherlock's mind works...
We have always been led to believe that Sherlock is one of the most intelligent men on the planet, but rather than a big reveal, it's nice to get a glimpse into how his mind works.
8. London like you have never seen it before
We were always aware Baker Street would be a main location, but London itself has never looked better in this adaptation of Sherlock.
