So ladies, read any interesting books lately? Actually, you don’t need to tell us what you’ve been reading because a new study has revealed that erotic novels have become more popular than award-winning fiction.
A new report by Rakuten’s Play.com found that racy writing, including Fifty Shades of Grey, was searched for 4,000 per cent more than those novels nominated for the Man Booker Prize which celebrates literary excellence.

E.L. James penned Fifty Shades of Grey which has dominated reading this year,
Erotic fiction also accounted for 14 per cent of all of the books sold on the website. To put that into perspective, award-winning novels didn’t even make up 0.5 per cent of total book sales.
As well as E.L. James' best-selling novel, Sylvia Day’s Bared to You and Reflected in You are also said to be very popular.
Speaking about the findings, Play.com Marketing Director, Adam Stewart said: “Although we weren’t surprised to see an increase in sales of erotic fiction on the site, we were shocked at how much they are outselling award-winning novels such as Hilary Mantel’s Bring up the Bodies.”
Hilary Mantel made history this year when she became the first woman to win the Man Booker Prize for a second time. Despite this incredible achievement, Hilary's novel is being outdone by saucier reads.
