Well, now in Instagram's brand new search features, to be rolled out later this year, the social media savants have rectified this problem.
According to Mashable, with the new update, searching for someone in the "people" tab will immediately show you whether or not they are following you.

You can also see which of your friends are following the person you have searched, AND users who have recently posted a photo will be highlighted.
Instagram is currently testing the features out on a few lucky iOS users, and the update can be expected to land later this year.
