Not sure what kind of career to go after? This could be the answer you’ve been looking for…

When you leave school, it can be hard to know what to do next.

With so many exciting career options and learning pathways out there, it can be hard to decide what the right next step is, or even know what it is you want to do.

And if you’re still unsure what path to take, we’ve got something that might help…

SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority (FET) has a huge selection of full and part-time courses to help you start your career. With a huge variety of courses delivered through local Education and Training Boards all across the country, there’s sure to be an opportunity out there that suits your needs.

Whether you’ve just done your leaving cert and are unsure of what you want to do, didn’t get the points for your first course choice or you’re looking for a course with an emphasis on real-life experience in a particular career and progress to employment, here are just some of the interesting career opportunities you can train for with Further Education and Training…

What kind of courses does FET offer?

FET offers full-time Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) and traineeship courses, part-time courses, online courses and apprenticeships, making it really convenient to find one that suits your schedule.

PLC courses are ideal for school leavers who maybe fell short of the points they needed for university or college, or aren’t sure what they want to do next. A PLC course is a convenient, low-cost way to explore any career options you’re interested in, and it will give you a leg up when it comes to applying for colleges in the future too.

With 61 different types available, apprenticeships are ideal for anyone who wants to learn on the job and make a steady income while they train and gain a qualification. Benefiting both the apprentice and the employer, with this option you’ll get to learn while you train in a new industry.

A traineeship combines learning in an education setting and in the workplace, and provides learners with job-specific training and workplace coaching with an employer at Levels 4 to 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications. They also give the learner the opportunity to gain valuable experience in real work and industry environments, providing cutting edge industry skills.

FET have free online and part-time courses too, and they’re an ideal option for someone looking to upskill or kickstart a new career.

Is FET suitable for me?

Most likely!

There are Further Education and Training courses to fit everyone’s needs. For those looking for full-time education, PLC courses are ideal, while online and part-time courses are perfect for someone who’s working full-time and looking for a bit more flexibility. Apprenticeships are a great route for anyone looking to make a steady income while they train, so there really are plenty of options available.

What kind of areas can I study?

How does a career as a lifeguard or outdoor activity instructor sound? Maybe you want to try animal sciences, TV and film production, or maybe you see yourself as a surfing instructor?

All these and more are available through FET’s PLCs, traineeships and part-time courses, so you really are spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing your career path. Some other popular choices include I.T, engineering, or project management, and you can browse all of FET’s courses here.
