Parking can be a bit of a nightmare but thankfully we never had to endure anything like this before. Officials in Israel refused to believe a student’s story about being framed by council workers, until she produced a video which proved she was right.
The Times of Israel reports that student Hila Ben-Baruch legally parked her car near her apartment in Tel Aviv last weekend. However, when she returned a few hours later, her car had been towed and a freshly-painted handicapped parking space was there instead.
Ms Ben-Baruch was ordered to pay a $350 fine to cover the towing cost. She was also given another fine for parking in a handicapped spot.
When the student contacted municipal officials in order to make a complaint, they did not believe her.
So, Ms Ben-Baruch decided to approach a security guard at the building across the street and ask if she could see CCTV footage of what actually had happened to her car.
When she saw the footage in the video above, the student immediately took to Facebook and posted the clip along with the message:
“To see and not believe. While the car was parked in a white-and-blue [legal] zone, two city hall workers arrived and began painting a handicapped space around the car!”
The Facebook post went viral immediately and within hours, the student was giving interviews about the incident to Israeli news stations.
Eventually the municipality was forced to issue a statement which said the incident was “a severe mistake and a case of incompetence.” The mayor of Tel Aviv and the deputy mayor also issued separate apologies.
The above video has gained more than 21,000 shares in the past two days. We think this story is proof that you should never underestimate the power of social media, huh?
