The hotel - the Puerto Plata -is self-catering, has decent on-site facilities, and it looks to be pretty laid back and casual. It has a 3.5 star rating on TripAdvisor with two-thirds of the reviewers rating it as Excellent or Very Good.
It's located in the popular Puerto Rico part of the island - which has loads of bars and restaurants as well as scuba-diving, snorkelling, and boat trips to see dolphins and whales.
