WATCH: The John Lewis Christmas ad is here, and it’s all about kindness

Jade Hayden

As heartwarming as you’d expect, really.

This year, we knew the John Lewis was going to hit different.

We expected painful scenes, heartwarming endings, to be bawling crying from the second the piano cover of another Keane track kicked in.

This year, however, John Lewis have done something a little different and created an ad that’s strictly about kindness, how little gestures can make a person’s day, and why doing your part during Covid can make all the difference.

Entitled ‘Give a Little Love,’ the ad begins with a boy whose ball is stuck in a tree. The kindness that befalls him is then transferred to others, creating a chain of random acts sure to put a smile on anyone’s face.

Animations show the ways we stayed connected during times we were supposed to be apart, as two neighbours pull a Christmas cracker from between their windows while maintaining their distance, and an NHS nurse helps a little girl with broken glasses.

The new ad features an original song too, written and performed by BRIT award winner Celeste. This is the first time John Lewis hasn’t opted for a cover for their Christmas ad.

Celeste said: “I felt really honoured to be asked to take part. The message that everyone really wanted to get across was the idea if you’re kind and giving, then these little acts hopefully can ricochet and make the world a better place.”

John Lewis have partnered with Waitrose for this year’s ad, aiming to raise £4million for UK charities Home Start and Fare Share, to help families most in need this Christmas.
