The poll, conducted by website www.promocodes.ie, asked 1,000 respondents how long they spend shopping for items including groceries, clothes and shoes, health and beauty, entertainment and gifts.
Shopping for health and beauty items took an average of 40 minutes a week. These purchases included necessary items like razors, tampons, medicines and personal hygiene along with luxuries such as expensive skin care products, designer make-up and perfumes.
An average 30 minutes every week was spent on entertainment such as books, films and music. Whilst shoppers liked to look at the items in retail stores, they often then buy them online or at the supermarket where they found the prices more competitive.
A further 20 minutes a week was spent buying cards and presents. Christmas was the busiest time of year, with shoppers saying they spend, on average, four days in total buying all the gifts they needed.
Around two and a half hours a week was spent just pottering around, with shoppers saying they like to browse before making a purchase and like to compare prices in different stores.
