Here Are Some Of The Words To Avoid When Writing Your CV

We're surprised by some of these!

Cathy Donohue

Putting together your CV can be a pretty nerve-wracking task as you want to make sure that it showcases your strengths.

There are some popular phrases that tend to crop up regularly but instead of helping you secure that dream job, the use of these ‘buzzwords’ might actually be detrimental.

A recent survey carried out by PurpleCV.co.uk found that there are certain words which mean your CV is likely to end up in the bin.

Number one on the list is ‘hard-working’ with a quarter of those surveyed finding this to be the most overused phrase.

Other additions to the vetoed list include ‘results-driven’ and ‘dedicated’ because you can only show this once you’ve started the job.

Andrew Arkley, from Purple CV, recommends steering away from ‘dynamic’, ‘strategic thinker’, ‘reliable’ and ‘passionate’ because again, these aren’t qualities you can prove on paper.

Team player has also been ousted as a phrase because if you’re going to be working with other people, Andrew says this should really go without saying.

As simple as it might seem, people often forget to spell and grammar check their applications according to Purple CV, and it should be a top priority.

Andrew also says that sending a PDF of your CV will help to avoid any formatting issues and researching the company you’re hoping to work off is key.

“Make sure you read the job specification so you can sprinkle some well-chosen ‘keywords’ from the spec directly into the CV – the more a hiring manager can pair you up with what they’re looking for, the better” he said.

Finally, steer away from using “jargon and corporate speak” because avoiding clichés is what will make your CV stand out.
