Here’s why Beyoncé’s birthday post should inspire you to create the same

Denise Curtin

For her 37th birthday, Queen Bey wrote an open letter to herself on her Instagram account.

Focusing on the past year of her life, the Love On Top singer took a moment to name some of her biggest accomplishments in those past 365 days, labelling it as a “monumental” year.

From the birth of her twins to performing at Coachella to creating a chart-selling album alongside her husband – Beyoncé listed everything she’s incredibly proud of.

But, why do this?

We’re all very much aware that Beyoncé is superhuman, she doesn’t need to tell us all she’s done, sure we’ve been following her every move?

Well, actually, this post is more so written by Beyoncé for Beyoncé, a chance for her to reflect, think and give herself gratitude for just how much she’s accomplished and just how truly blessed she is. Call it a moment of reflection.

And although we’re all not Beyoncé (granted), taking time to reflect on accomplishments is something we’re terrible at doing – no matter how big or small. We receive praise from others yet, the thought of praising ourselves seems humiliating and “brag” like.

But the thing is, it’s something you should be doing. Take lead from Beyoncé and take time, be it even once a year, to give yourself a pat on the back. Remind yourself that besides any hiccups, shit days or times when you felt like giving up, you’re still doing unreal and the things you do are quite remarkable.

Taking time now and again to bathe in your own feats is key to moving forward and continuing to kill it. We’re fantastic at being our own worst enemy so, be sure to be your own BFF at times too and reflect on all the good that you do.

You’re actually quite incredible, I’ll have you know.

Here’s how Bey did it (even global superstars need to remind themselves that they’re pretty special).

“At 36, I became a new mother of 3. I breastfed twins. I renewed my vows with my husband of ten years. I came back home to the stage to do Coachella, after pregnancy. Then my husband and I released our album together, Everything Is Love. And we’ve been touring with our family around the world, and loving it.

“This year has been monumental for me. I thank God for everyone in my life. Thank you for all the positivity and for the beautiful birthday wishes. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn from my past, living in the present, and surrendering to the future. I love you, Hive. B”

And now, it’s over to you, in the past 365 days, what are you proud of? Take time to think about this. Did a new friend come into your life? Did you take that holiday you’ve always dreamed about? Did you get a promotion? Did you finally quit your job.

Give yourself some love for living the life you create. We promise it’ll make you smile.
