Irish stereotypes that always make us laugh just in time for Paddy’s Day

Have you heard the one about the Irish man who walked into a bar?

Irish people are well known the world over for lots of reasons. Our amazing sports stars like Conor McGregor and Annalise Murphy, our gorgeous scenery in places like Glendalough and The Burren, and most importantly our never ending banter and craic.

However, despite all that a few lingering (and pretty funny) stereotypes about Irish folk still exist. If you’ve ever been abroad then you’ll know exactly what we mean.

But have you ever wondered what stereotype makes Irish people laugh the most?

As part of BIC’s new Lighter Moments Campaign, they carried out some research to celebrate the lighter sides of Irish life! They asked 433 adults lots of questions about life in Ireland, from the best way to celebrate Paddy’s day (apparently it’s by going to a parade), to how many of us have pulled a sickie on March 18 (a whopping 30%).

But the most interesting stat to come out of the survey has to be what the funniest stereotype about Irish people is.

Do you think you can guess what the number one contender was?

Drum roll please…

In at number one with 35% of the vote was the stereotype that ”everyone in Ireland says ‘top of the mornin’ to ya.”’ Which we can definitely agree with because, seriously, what self-respecting Irish person has ever said that?

This was closely followed by the stereotype that everyone drinks which received 27% of the vote.

And finally, 11% of people stated that the funniest stereotype about Ireland was the assumption that everyone in Ireland has red hair and freckles.

We don’t know where they got that idea from…

The survey actually uncovered lots of interesting facts about our national holiday. Apparently, 84% of you will wear green on the big day while more than half of those polled know someone who claims to have seen a leprechaun.

To celebrate Paddy’s Day (and all our little Irish idiosyncrasies) in style BIC have released a range of Irish-themed lighters just for the occasion.

Carry your BIC pocket lighter with pride this Paddy’s Day and pick up an Irish themed BIC lighter at newsagents and supermarkets nationwide.
