The ISPCA is seeking a home for a rescue python called Penelope.

The metre long snake was discovered in a park in Leitrim over the summer and was then taken to a reptile centre in Letterkenny where she was monitored for many weeks.

Penelope remained at the centre until she was deemed fit and healthy enough to be rehomed.

The ISPCA are now seeking an experienced and knowledgable owner to adopt Penelope – one who has “skills to provide proper care for the duration of her life.”

ISPCA Senior Inspector Kevin Mc Ginley said:

“It is important that this python goes to an experienced owner. We saw a few snakes on the loose this summer, and would like to remind the public that these reptiles make great escape artists.

“Please make sure their enclosures are secure, and please don’t deliberately release them.”

Penelope was discovered “sunning herself” on the side of a trail near Leitrim’s Kinlough Park in July.

The royal python was spotted many times over the course of the week before she was caught. She was slightly hungry, but deemed to be in good health, as well as “social and friendly.”

No details about her previous owner have emerged.

You can contact the ISPCA about Penelope at [email protected] or (074) 9152360.
