On July 18th, 1974, the first meeting of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association was held at Hayes Hotel in Thurles. Later that same year the first Senior Ladies All Ireland Football Final took place with Tipperary winning the crown.
On September 29th, 2013 the 40th Senior Ladies All Ireland Football Final will take place at Croke Park and to mark the occasion every player that represented their county in the All Ireland Final is being invited to attend the 40th All Ireland Final in September.
Over the period of the last 40 years some of the players that have contested the finals have inevitably lost contact with their county boards. Now, the Ladies Gaelic Football Association are asking anyone that has played in a final or anyone that knows somebody that played in a final to either get in contact with their local county board or to contact the LGFA directly with their details.
Pat Quill, President of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association said; “This is an extremely significant year for the LGFA as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our foundation. During our relatively short history we have seen some amazing achievements on the field, some of which may have faded in the memory as time passes. This is an opportunity to relive some of those great moments and to put the focus back on some of the great teams and players that have pioneered the sport. We hope to have as many of our All Ireland finalists back in Croke Park on September 29th and I would urge all of the former players to get in touch with us and if any of them have any photographs or memorabilia that they would like to share then that would be all the better.”
The Senior Ladies All Ireland Final has been contested by 16 different counties and won by 12 counties with Kerry being the most successful county having won on 11 occasions including a remarkable 9-in-a-row between 1982 and 1990. Most recently Cork has been the dominant county in the country having won 7 times in the last 8 years.
The Ladies All Ireland Junior Football Championship was contested for the first time in 1985 and has had 23 different winners during its 28-year history with no team winning the title on more than 2 occasions. The Ladies Intermediate football Championship was won by Kerry in its inaugural year in 1997 with Armagh winning the 2013 title, this year will be the 12th time that the Intermediate championship will be contested.
Any former players or anyone with information can contact the Ladies Gaelic Football Association on [email protected] or on 01 836 3156
