Imagine you’ve just gotten married and you’re on Facebook one day only to receive a message from someone claiming to be your new hubby’s wife.
Well that’s exactly what happened to a woman from Melbourne who got hitched to her partner during a civil ceremony.
During the ceremony the Family Court requested confirmation of the man’s divorce. He said that there was no record of his first marriage and that the union had never been valid so the wedding went ahead.
The woman discovered that her husband had lied about his first marriage.
But soon the issue of his old wife came up again. In fact she wrote to his new wife asking: “Hello, new Mrs Keyet. How can you be Mrs Keyet when I am still Mrs Keyet? From the old Mrs Keyet.”
The new wife suggested that the old wife check her records as she was of the belief that the marriage was not valid.
According to news.com.au the newlyweds then split after which the new Mrs Keyet got back in touch with her husband's first wife asking for a copy of the marriage certificate.
It was only when she looked at the divorce registries that she discovered that there were no records of the marriage ever being dissolved.
The man did not appear in court but Justice Kristy Macmillan granted his new wife an annulment. She is now said to be considering bringing bigamy charges against her former husband.
