Man sues ex-wife’s new lover for ‘alienation of affection’ – and wins

He was awarded a massive pay-out from the ruling, too.

In what might be seen as a bit of landmark moment for those who are ending their relationships, a man in the United States has successfully sued his ex-wife’s new lover, and the court ruled in his favour.

Kevin Howard from Carolina told local radio station WITN that the divorce was “like someone calling you and telling you that a family member had tragically died.

“She had originally told me that she wanted a divorce because I work too much, wasn’t around to be there. I talked about that as part of my mistake in the situation, but it was like a punch in the gut, because I thought I had this trust for 12 years and love.”

Howard’s lawyer told the New York Post that “I said, ‘Do you find something funny about this process?’ And he said, ‘Yes… I think it’s funny that your client would sue me over this.’

“And for people who have that perception of this [law], that’s a very dangerous perception to have. Because the same person who laughed in that deposition, that defendant now has a $750,000 judgment against [him], so I don’t think he’s laughing now.”

Yep. He won three quarters of a million dollars, or a little over €683,000.

The law in North Carolina that allows for people to sue under “alienation of affection” is also enforced in Hawaii, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Utah, but has been repealed in most other states around the country.
