Narwhal the ‘unicorn puppy’ is officially being trained as a therapy dog

Jade Hayden

Good news, everyone.

Last month, word of a unicorn puppy began spreading.

His name was Narwhal, and he had an equal parts tiny and adorable tail growing right between his eyes.

The puppy was found wandering around Missouri before being picked up by rescue group, Mac’s Mission.

The charity took Narwhal to the vet where they were informed that the puppy was entirely healthy, that there are no bones in the tail, and that it shouldn’t affect his life in any way.

Well, except for ensuring that he is the Cutest Boy In The World, but that’s beside the point.

Mac’s Mission later began the ultimately impossible task of finding a forever home for Narwhal – a feat that would have proved difficult even if he didn’t have the extra waggedy tail on his face.

However, amidst the hundreds of applications from loving potential adoptees, the shelter also received quite a few nasty messages about Narwhal’s appearance.

So much so that they decided it would be best to keep him at the shelter and train him as a therapy dog themselves.

Southeast Missourian reports that the puppy will stay with Mac’s Mission founder Rochelle Steffen, where he will become the charity’s spokesperson (spokesdog, tbh), promoting the message that “different is awesome.”

“I had no intention initially of keeping him,” said Rochelle. “I didn’t want a puppy.”

“But Narwhal is absolutely, exactly what we needed.

“It’s not just a decision from me. The whole rescue cannot fathom him leaving. We all fell in love with him.”

The plan is for Narwhal to eventually be trained as a therapy dog, so he can help other humans as much as they have helped him.

Until now though, he’s probably happy enough barking his awesome message.

Fair play to him.
