NASA astronaut captures incredible image of Dublin from space

Sarah McKenna Barry

Well this is breath-taking.

A NASA astronaut has captured an absolutely stunning image of Dublin from space.

Shane Kimbrough, a Texan astronaut at the International Space Station, snapped this image of our fair capital, and called it his “favourite city”.

Posting the incredible photo on Twitter, Mr Kimbrough wrote: “One of my favourite cities – Dublin, Ireland! Look forward to seeing all my friends there next year!”

The photo captures the entirety of the city light up at night.

Kimbrough is currently part of the Expedition 65 crew, which took off in April.

He has been in space for the past 172 days, and is due to return to earth later this month.

Indeed, Ireland looks stunning from space, and Kimbrough isn’t the only one who thinks so.

Famously, in 2013, astronaut Chris Hadfield made history by sending the first tweet as Gaeilge from space.

While on board the International Space Station, Mr Hadfield snapped a picture of Dublin and wrote:” Tá Éire fiorálainn! (Ireland is very beautiful) Land of green hills and dark beer. With capital Dublin glowing in the Irish night.”

Naturally, his comments went down a treat with Irish Twitter and in a follow-up tweet he wrote: “Wow, I can feel the warmth of the Irish all the way up here – go raibh maith agaibh! I’ll do my best to photo more cities as clouds clear.”

Hadfield then went on to share images Dingle, Ballina, Co. Sligo and Belfast.
